The Early Pregnancy Scan

Finding out that you’re pregnant is one of the most memorable moments of your life. The first few weeks are a time of tremendous excitement; and the 12 week pregnancy scan can feel like a lifetime away.

Our private early pregnancy ultrasound scan or 6 week private pregnancy scan is designed to provide you with reassurance in the early stages of your first trimester. If you’re at least 6 weeks pregnant, it’s the chance to assess the viability of the pregnancy; and if all is well, it’s also the opportunity to view your baby’s heartbeat.

At your private early pregnancy scan you can also gain insight into how many weeks pregnant you are, and how well everything is progressing.

If you’re experiencing any bleeding or unusual pain, an early pregnancy scan can help provide you with peace of mind and find out for certain how your pregnancy is progressing. When you come for your scan at The Scan Clinic, we’ll make sure that you feel comfortable, relaxed and well prepared for the experience.

What is the main objective of this scan?

  • If visible, assess location and viability of an early pregnancy from 6 to 16 weeks using ultrasound.
  • Determine if single or multiple pregnancy.
  • Early scan measurements including gestational age of your pregnancy and estimated due date (EDD).

Typical reasons for this scan include bleeding in early pregnancy (threatened miscarriage), history of any miscarriage or ectopic pregnancies, pain in early pregnancy and some other conditions. Read more about bleeding in early pregnancy here.

How do I prepare for this scan?

  • A full bladder may be required for the early pregnancy scan therefore please drink 1 litre of fluid approximately 1.5 hours before your scheduled appointment and please try your best not to empty your bladder before the examination. An internal scan may also be required for this service.
  • Please bring along any information / medical notes / reports which are in relation to the pregnancy as they may provide useful information for the scan.

Why choose us?

Quality-Assured.pngWe pride ourselves on providing a high quality service and as such employ proven high quality imaging protocols, pathways and procedures. We are trusted by GP's, doctors, physiotherapists, midwifes and many other healthcare professionals.

Our clientele also includes doctors, consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, bankers, lawyers and many other professionals who have chosen us based on our reputation.

Furthermore we have provided services to large national organisations and unlike other many other diagnostic clinics provide services to specific NHS organisations which require us to have in place extremely strict quality control measures.

Who will I see?

Quality-Assured_1.pngYou will be cared for by a small team and seen by a specialist healthcare professional who has proven experience and specialises in clinical medical ultrasound. Unlike other diagnostic imaging ultrasound is "real time" imaging and the quality of the scan and ultimately the information you take away depends upon the expertise, experience  & skill of the person scanning you. This is an important point for consideration hence why at The Scan Clinic you will always be seen by an expert who has vast expertise and experience in the field of medical ultrasound.

Ultrasound: Background

An ultrasound scan is a painless test that provides images of the inside of the body by using high frequency sound waves. These sound waves are at a frequency which cannot be heard by the human ear but when they bounce off different parts of the body, create echoes that are picked up by the probe and turned into a moving image.

Unlike other scans such as MRI and CT, ultrasound does not involve radiation and is in real time i.e. live imaging and is not static i.e. still pictures. This live information is interpreted and is used as the basis of the subsequent diagnostic report.

There are many kinds of ultrasound scans that can be performed as ultrasound has numerous applications in healthcare and are ultimately beneficial to us if used in the right context by a competent body or person.  However as with any test, ultrasound scans have limitations some of which are generic to all scans such as not being able to visualise bone clearly or scan specific and therefore may not be suitable in certain situations and like any test can not diagnose every problem.

Please note

  • Sometimes at the early scan, we may not detect the heartbeat or visualise the foetus on the screen. In instances where we’re unable to do so, this may simply be because it's too early for the ultrasound to be conducted successfully or could indicate that a miscarriage has occurred. In the event of this happening, we’d advise that you arrange for a follow-up scan at a later date, which can be arranged at The Scan Clinic.
  • Please bring your pregnancy book / previous scan results to your appointment.
  • This scan does NOT include Combined / Quad / NIPT Screening for Downs Syndrome or other genetic abnormalities.
  • All scans are carried out with the aim to accomplish the main objective only.
  • Multiple pregnancy / twins require an additional charge of £30.
  • We will require details of your GP / Health Care Professional; this will be requested from you prior to or at the time of your scan.
  • This scan may involve internal scanning.
  • Our pregnancy scans does not replace or substitute any scan you have or will have with the NHS / Regular health provider.
