Why choose us for your Liver Fibrosis ELF Blood Test
About the Liver Fibrosis ELF Blood Test blood test
The Liver Fibrosis blood test, or ELF test, is a diagnostic test that measures the levels of specific biomarkers in the blood to assess the degree of fibrosis (scarring) in the liver. This test is primarily used for patients with chronic liver conditions to evaluate the extent of liver damage without needing a liver biopsy.
Key Components of the Liver Fibrosis Test
The liver ELF test measures three specific biomarkers:
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
- Procollagen III N-terminal Peptide (PIIINP)
- Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1)
These markers are linked to liver fibrosis and give an overall score that correlates with the severity of fibrosis in the liver.
Why is the ELF Test Done?
Assess Liver Fibrosis
The primary use of the ELF test is to assess the level of fibrosis in patients with chronic liver diseases, such as hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or alcohol-related liver disease.
Monitor Disease Progression
The test helps monitor how liver fibrosis progresses over time, which is crucial in managing chronic liver conditions.
Non-Invasive Alternative to Biopsy
The ELF test provides a non-invasive alternative to liver biopsy, which is more invasive, carries risks, and can be uncomfortable for patients.
Guide Treatment Decisions
By determining the extent of liver damage, the ELF test can help doctors make informed decisions about treatment options and the urgency of intervention.
Biomarker information for Liver Fibrosis ELF Blood Test blood test
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that helps retain moisture in the skin and eyes and lubricates the joints. It also plays a crucial role in wound healing by controlling inflammation and redirecting blood flow to damaged tissue.
PIINP (procollagen III amino-terminal peptide) can be a marker of hepatic fibrosis. It is used to monitor hepatic fibrosis, particularly in dermatology patients receiving methotrexate—part of ELF testing.
There is evidence that serum PIIINP measurement is an effective non-invasive test for detecting and monitoring methotrexate-induced liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, and serial measurements may reduce the need for liver biopsy.
TIMP 1 (Tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1) is a glycoprotein that regulates growth and apoptosis in various cell types.
Our Reviews
What does the Liver Fibrosis ELF Blood Test blood test involve?
This blood test is just like a standard blood test.
You will be asked to uncover you left or right arm and suitable vein is found. A tourniquet will be placed and tightened around your upper arm allowing the veins to swell and a needle will be placed into your vein. A small quantity of blood is then drawn into tubes. Once the procedure is complete a small plaster will be placed onto the site which can be removed after a few hours.
