Beta HCG (bHCG)

About the Private Pregnancy Blood Tests London blood test

The pregnancy blood test is more accurate and sensitive than a traditional home pregnancy urine test. It can help you confirm if you are pregnant and determine the approximate age of your unborn baby.

Our private pregnancy blood test is used by doctors and midwives to determine how much pregnancy hormone is in your blood and confirm if you are pregnant and give an indication of the approximate age of your unborn baby. The pregnancy blood test is quantitative and will be expressed as a number. This number is the amount of the pregnancy hormone in your blood. The hormone measured is called the hCG hormone also called bHCG.

The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) blood test measures the level of hCG hormone present in a sample of your blood. It’s one of the crucial pregnancy blood tests often to confirm pregnancy and check for other parameters.

What is the Beta hCG Test?

The hCG test goes by many names, such as the following:
● Beta-hCG blood test
● Quantitative blood pregnancy test
● Quantitative hCG blood test
● Quantitative serial beta-hCG test
● Repeat the quantitative beta-hCG test.
It’s important to know that this blood test differs from the hCG urine tests you can purchase over the counter.
The hCG blood test can provide conclusive results even in cases where hCG levels are quite low and are not affected by dehydration, as is the case with the urine test.

What is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin?

The human chorionic gonadotropin hormone of hCG is a hormone produced by cells in the developing placenta that nourishes the egg after it is fertilised.
hCG can first be detected in a blood sample about 11 days after conception. The levels of hCG continue to double every 48 to 72 hours. They reach a peak around 8 to 11 weeks after conception. They then decline and level off, remaining steady for the rest of the pregnancy.

The hCG Test Results

hCG blood test measures the specific hCG hormone in your blood in international units per litre (IU/L).
hCG pregnancy blood tests check for elevated levels of hCG in the blood. A high level of hCG indicates that a person is pregnant. The hCG level may also help determine the foetus’s age.
The hCG levels rise in the first trimester, then drop slightly and peak at 28,000 to 210,000 IU/L around 12 weeks after conception. If the hCG is higher than the average pregnancy level, it could indicate more than one foetus.
A negative hCG test means a person is not pregnant. If you suspect you’re still pregnant, you can repeat the test after a few days.

What is the Beta hCG Test Used For?

The hCG blood test is done for various reasons. It helps to confirm pregnancy, determine the approximate age of the foetus. It can also be use to aid in the diagnoses an abnormal pregnancy such as an ectopic pregnancy or a potential miscarriage.

The hCG blood test is sometimes used to screen for pregnancy before you undergo certain medical treatments that could potentially harm a developing baby.

If the hCG test concludes that someone is pregnant, the healthcare professional can ensure that they’re protected and that the foetus isn’t harmed by those medical treatments.

How the Test is Performed

A beta hCG test measures the level of hCG hormone in the blood sample. When you visit our clinic for the test, a healthcare professional will take a blood sample by following these steps:

  • An elastic band is wrapped around your upper arm to stop blood flow and make the veins in your arm more visible.
  • A vein is located on the skin, and the area around the vein is cleaned with alcohol.
  • A needle is inserted into the vein, and a tube is attached to the end of the needle to collect blood.
  • After enough blood is collected, the elastic band is removed.

When the needle is inserted into the vein, you may feel a brief stinging or pinching sensation or you may not feel anything at all. No particular preparation is required for the pregnancy blood test.

Biomarker information for Private Pregnancy Blood Tests London blood test

This blood test includes the biomarkers shown below along with information about each biomarker.
Beta HCG (bHCG)

The hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (better known as hCG) is produced during pregnancy. It is made by cells formed in the placenta, which nourishes the egg after it has been fertilised and becomes attached to the uterine wall.

The hormone starts to be produced around six days after fertilisation and can usually be detected 10 days after a missed menstrual period. As this hormone is produced in high quantity during pregnancy a blood test is the most accurate way to confirm if you are pregnant and help get a general idea of how far along you might be.

What does the Private Pregnancy Blood Tests London blood test involve?

This blood test is just like a standard blood test.

You will be asked to uncover you left or right arm and suitable vein is found. A tourniquet will be placed and tightened around your upper arm allowing the veins to swell and a needle will be placed into your vein. A small quantity of blood is then drawn into tubes. Once the procedure is complete a small plaster will be placed onto the site which can be removed after a few hours.

How do I prepare

  • The blood test requires access to the area of interest, therefore, it is recommended to wear loose clothing to facilitate this process.

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional more

Private Pregnancy Blood Tests London FAQ's

How Much is the Pregnancy Blood Test in London?

The cost of the pregnancy blood test in London varies depending on where you get the test. At the Scan Clinic, the cost of the test is £85, which includes the cost of the testing and blood results, which you should get in 1-2 days.

What is a Good Beta hCG Level in Pregnancy?

The usual level of Beta hCG hormone found in a non-pregnant woman is <5 IU/L; in a menopausal woman, it is <9.5UI/L, and in a healthy man, it is <2 UI/L.

How Do I Prepare for the Pregnancy Blood Test?

No specific preparation is necessary for this type of test. You do not even need to fast to take it. However, you should avoid biotin-rich foods.

Can Stress Affect hCG Levels?

Stress affects a lot of parameters in the body but not hCG levels. hCG is formed as a result of the egg’s successful fertilisation. It has no connection with the stress levels of the woman. However, stress can affect the production of other hormones, such as oestrogen and progesterone, but not hCG.

When is the Best Time to Do the Beta hCG Test?

It is recommended to wait until the first day of the missed period before taking the test to ensure an accurate beta-hCG test positive report for pregnancy. However, beta-hCG tests can show positive results as early as 10 days after conception. It is also possible to get false negatives when the test is taken too early.

Important Notes

  • We may require details of your GP / Health Care Professional before or at the time of the test.
  • Blood results require interpretation. All results should be interpreted by your regular health care professional / GP.
