Rubella Antibody Test IgG
Why choose us for your Rubella Immunity Test
About the Rubella Immunity Test blood test
The Rubella antibody test (specifically the Rubella IgG test) measures the levels of protective antibodies against the Rubella virus in your blood.
Rubella, also known as “German Measles,” is typically a mild viral infection. However, it is of significant clinical importance for women planning pregnancy or in their early stages of pregnancy. This test confirms whether you have developed long-term immunity to the virus, either through previous vaccination (MMR) or a past infection.
Rubella IgG: This marker detects the presence of IgG antibodies, which are produced by the immune system following a Rubella infection or vaccination. These antibodies stay in the blood for years, providing long-term protection.
This can affect or be useful for:
- Pregnancy planning
- Occupational health
- Immunity confirmation
Why is the Rubella antibody Test Performed?
Your clinician may recommend a Rubella antibody test to confirm your immune status and ensure you are protected. Common reasons include:
Pre-conception Planning: To ensure immunity before pregnancy, as Rubella can cause serious birth defects (Congenital Rubella Syndrome) if contracted during pregnancy.
Pregnancy Screening: To check the mother’s immune status as part of routine antenatal care.
Healthcare Employment: Many healthcare roles require proof of immunity to prevent the spread of the virus to vulnerable patients.
Confirming Vaccination Success: To verify that a previous MMR vaccine has provided the necessary level of protection.
Travel: For individuals traveling to regions where Rubella outbreaks are more common.
What Do the Results Mean?
Your results indicate the level of IgG antibodies present. Broadly speaking:
Positive (Immune): A result above the laboratory threshold suggests you have sufficient antibodies and are immune to the Rubella virus.
Negative (Non-Immune): A result below the threshold indicates you do not have detectable immunity. If you are not pregnant, your healthcare provider may suggest an MMR booster.
Equivocal: A borderline result where immunity cannot be confirmed. In these cases, a follow-up test or a booster dose may be recommended.
Important note: This test checks for long-term immunity (IgG). If you currently have symptoms of a rash or fever and suspect an active infection, a different test (Rubella IgM) may be required.
How is the Test Performed?
The Rubella antibody test is straightforward and similar to a standard venous blood draw.
A small tourniquet is placed, and a suitable vein (typically in the arm) is located.
A needle is inserted, and a small amount of blood is collected into a tube.
A plaster is applied over the puncture site; you can resume normal activity immediately afterwards.
Biomarker information for Rubella Immunity Test blood test
Rubella Antibody Test (IgG) detects long-term antibodies (Immunoglobulin G) to the rubella virus (German measles), indicating past infection or vaccination, confirming immunity.
Our Reviews
What does the Rubella Immunity Test blood test involve?
This blood test is just like a standard blood test.
You will be asked to uncover you left or right arm and suitable vein is found. A tourniquet will be placed and tightened around your upper arm allowing the veins to swell and a needle will be placed into your vein. A small quantity of blood is then drawn into tubes. Once the procedure is complete a small plaster will be placed onto the site which can be removed after a few hours.
How do I prepare
- The blood test requires access to the area of interest, therefore, it is recommended to wear loose clothing to facilitate this process.
- Wear short sleeves or clothing that allows easy access to your arm for the blood draw.
- No fasting is required for this specific test, however if this test is part of a broader blood panel, please check if fasting is required for other markers.
- If you are unsure about the preparation, please contact us for further information.

Rubella Immunity Test FAQ's
How long do results take?
Results are typically available within 1-2 working days.
Can I take this test if I am already pregnant?
Yes. It is often performed during pregnancy to check your status. If you are found to be non-immune, your midwife will advise you on precautions to take until after you give birth, at which point you can receive the vaccine.
Does a positive result mean I'm currently sick?
No. A positive IgG result indicates “memory” immunity from the past. A different marker (IgM) is used to detect an active, current infection.
What is a "protective" level of Rubella IgG?
In the UK and most international standards, a level greater than 10 IU/mL is considered evidence of immunity. If your result is between 5 IU/mL and 9.9 IU/mL, it is classified as “equivocal” (borderline), and your doctor may be advise to have a booster or a re-test.
Why is Rubella screening no longer "routine" in NHS pregnancy check-ups?
As of 2016, the NHS ceased routine Rubella screening for pregnant women because the vaccination program has been so successful that the virus is considered eliminated in the UK. However, many women still choose private screening for peace of mind, especially if they have traveled from abroad, missed their childhood vaccines, or are planning a pregnancy and want to be 100% certain of their status.
