Ultrasound Preparation

 

All of the scans listed below have special instructions and preparation required in order to perform the scan therefore please read the preparation information carefully as failure to arrive to your appointment with the correct preparation may result in us not being able to see you at your appointment or not being able to perform the scan.

Fasting

  • You will need to have been fasting from food for at least 6 hours prior to having this scan, however you may drink clear fluids such as water.
  • If you are diabetic then maintain your normal food intake but try your best to avoid fatty or dairy products for at least 6 hours prior to having the scan.
  • You may also maintain your normal medication

Full Bladder

  • A full bladder is required for this scan – Please drink 1 litre of fluid approximately 1.5 hours before your scheduled appointment and please try your best not to empty your bladder before the examination.
  • You can eat as normal.
  • You may also maintain your normal medication.
  • Pelvis Scan OnlyAn internal scan may be necessary therefore please wear loose clothing to help facilitate this.

  • Internal scanning may be required with your approval (Women only).

Partial Bladder - Pregnancy Scans

  • If you are between 16 -22 weeks pregnant  – A comfortably full bladder is recommended.
  • If you are over 22 weeks pregnant  – There is no specific preparation required.

4D Bonding Scan

  • A partially full bladder may provide better images for this scan.
  • Anterior placenta - if you have an anterior placenta we suggest having your scan earlier from 24-28 weeks. After this point the 4D scan may not be as clear. 
  • Twins - For twins we would suggest having this scan from 21-24 weeks.
