Private Blood Test FAQ's

How do I prepare for a blood test?

The healthcare professional who referred or recommended your blood test will usually tell you whether there are any specific instructions you need to follow before your test. We also mention on the blood test profile page if there are any specific preparation instructions. If you are not sure then please feel free to get in touch with our customer care team

It’s important to follow the instructions you’re given, as it may affect the result of the test and mean it needs to be delayed or carried out again.

When will I get my results?

We aim to ensure that all our tests have a quick turnaround time. For most blood tests, results are typically sent to you via email within 48 hours. However, some more complex tests may take longer – each test will have an estimated turnaround time (TAT) specified next to the test name.

If you are in doubt or want to be sure then please do not hesitate to contact our friendly customer care team via phone, email or live chat and they will be happy to clarify for you.

How is a blood test performed?

A blood test usually involves taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm. The usual place for a sample to be taken from is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface.

A tight band (tourniquet) is usually put around your upper arm. This squeezes the arm, temporarily slowing down the flow of blood and causing the vein to swell. This makes it easier for a sample to be taken.

A needle attached to a syringe or special container is inserted into the vein. The syringe is used to draw out a sample of your blood. You may feel a slight pricking or scratching sensation as the needle goes in, but it shouldn’t be painful.

When the sample has been taken, the tourniquet will be released, and the needle will be removed. Pressure is applied to the skin for a few minutes using a cotton-wool pad. A plaster may be put on the small wound to keep it clean.

What happens after I get my results?

After you receive your results, we strongly recommend you share them with the healthcare professional who referred / recommended these tests.

Getting blood results interpreted by your own doctor is of utmost importance for several critical reasons.

Your doctor has a deep knowledge of your medical history, specific health conditions, and lifestyle factors, which enables them to accurately interpret the results of your blood tests. This personalised insight enables them to identify subtle changes or abnormalities that might go unnoticed by a generalist.

Secondly, having your doctor interpret the results fosters a strong doctor-patient relationship, fostering open communication and trust. This rapport is crucial in discussing any potential health concerns, crafting tailored treatment plans, and making informed decisions together.

Lastly, the interpretation by your own doctor ensures continuity of care, with a clear understanding of your health progression over time. By involving your doctor in the process, you enhance the precision and effectiveness of medical interventions, leading to better health outcomes and overall well-being.

If this is not possible in a timely manner, then feel free to contact us to enquire about results interpretation from one of ourdoctors;, this is not currently available but will be coming soon.

How much is a full blood test in London?

The cost of a full blood test varies depending on where you get it. Some private labs have developed their own full blood tests. The starting price is about £60.

How long does a blood test take?

The results of most common blood tests are ready within a day or two. Some blood tests may take long than this. With private blood tests, you will get communication on the time frame. But you can expect it to be significantly shorter than with public labs.

Why do some tests require fasting?

The food and drinks you take are absorbed into the bloodstream and could affect the results of the blood test. For more accurate results, the technician or your doctor might request that you fast before the test.

Are private blood tests worth it?

Private blood tests are worth it if you value your time and peace of mind. They save you time and are more convenient. The results are out sooner, so you don’t have to fuss and worry. It’s also worth noting that the sooner you get the results, the sooner your doctor can determine the best way forward.

What would show up in a blood test?

Blood tests can be used to check various parameters in the blood. Depending on the type of blood test, what shows up might vary. Generally, the tests look into white and red blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin and haematocrit. The tests can also look into components like blood sugar, oxygen levels and other dissolved nutrients in the bloodstream.

Why Get a Full Blood Test

The complete blood count or full blood test is one of the most important types of blood tests. This routine blood test checks for levels of 10 different components in major cells in the blood like the white blood cells, the platelets and the red blood cells.

Some of the critical components that this test measures are;

  • Haemoglobin
  • Haematocrit
  • Red blood cell count

Abnormal levels of these compounds may indicate various conditions and deficiencies depending on the results. Some of the common indications of abnormal levels of the components tested by the CBC are;

  • Nutritional deficiencies like vitamin B12 or B6
  • Anaemia
  • Blood cancer
  • Infection
  • Immune system disorders
  • Clotting problems

Depending on the full blood test findings, the doctor can order follow-up tests to confirm the abnormal levels and zero in on the diagnosis.

A full blood test is done for several reasons;

A look at your overall health

A CBD can be a part of a medical exam to check your general health and look for conditions such as anaemia and leukaemia. When going for your routine health check-up, the doctor might order full blood tests as part of the check-up.

To diagnose a medical condition

Like many others, this blood test helps to find the cause of various symptoms like fatigue, fever and weakness. It can also help to find the cause of swelling, bruising, bleeding and pain. Depending on the symptoms you present, the doctor might request this test to create a basis for their suspicion and as part of the diagnosis procedure.

To check a medical condition

If you’ve already been diagnosed, a full blood test can be a way to keep tabs on the condition if it affects the blood cell counts.

To check on medical treatment

Your doctor can also request a full blood test to check if the treatment is working and whether the treatment with medicines and radiation is affecting the blood cell counts. With conditions like infections, a full blood test can be used to check the fluctuation of certain cells in the blood to determine if the infection is responding positively to the medication.

Benefits of Getting a Private Blood Test

Blood tests play a crucial role in monitoring your health and detecting any health issues. The tests provide vital information needed to make informed health decisions. Just as important as the tests is how quickly and efficiently you can get the tests done and the results released.

The process is easier when you opt for a private blood test. At The Scan Clinic, you can get different blood tests conducted quickly and efficiently. Some of the benefits of using our private blood test service include;

Quicker results

Public labs take many days to return your blood test results, leaving you feeling more anxious and worried. Private blood tests get back to you faster, with an average time of 24 hours. You get the information you need on time, giving you peace of mind. You also have to consider that early detection sometimes allows for medical care in advance. In such cases, every minute counts, and you can’t afford to waste valuable time waiting for the reports.

Increased convenience

Most public institutions have very restrictive open and closing times that might not coincide with your working hours. The same applies to public blood services. Private clinics are more flexible. They offer scheduled appointments and even operate on the weekends. That gives even the busiest of people a schedule to work with.

Better privacy

Private blood tests offer a more confidential experience. Structured appointments with the option of mobile collection and a quieter experience all contribute to increased discretion and patient comfort. Evidently, private blood tests in London have plenty to offer. There are some out-of-pocket costs, but compared to the benefits, it’s a small price to pay.
