About the Dating Scan

You’ve now reached the end of your first trimester, and things are starting to get rather exciting. The dating scan provides you with the chance to see your baby on the screen, which is always a magical experience, particularly if it’s your first child. It’s also the opportunity to find out the approximate date of your baby’s arrival.

At our dating scan, you’ll be made to feel comfortable and relaxed; after all, you want to enjoy the experience and take your time. We’ll provide you with two images of your baby in our private pregnancy scan.

About our Dating Scan

A dating ultrasound scan is done between 8 and 14 weeks. Its purpose is to help estimate your baby’s due date. In early pregnancies, most babies of the same gestational age are about the same size. A dating scan measures your baby, which helps the doctor estimate how long you have been pregnant and when your baby is due.

Not everyone needs a dating scan. But if you’re unsure when you conceived, it might help you know your estimated due date to have the recommended tests at the right time. Also, knowing your due date is crucial so you know when your baby is born prematurely, or you’ve gone past your due date, and you’re thinking of having your labour induced.

A dating scan is done between 8 and 14 weeks of the pregnancy. Most babies of the same gestational age are about the same size. So the scan can measure the size of the baby, which can tell them how far along you are.

In addition to the dating scan, some doctors or midwives might recommend that you also get a test for nuchal translucency. Both might be performed between 11 and 13 weeks for the best results so that you can have both tests during a single ultrasound scan.

What Happens During a Dating Scan?

Any visit to the clinic can cause anxiety and stress. But at The Scan Clinic, we provide a calm and comfortable environment and do our best to explain the processes clearly so you know everything we’re doing.

The dating scan can be done through your abdomen or transvaginally (through the vagina). The method we use will depend on several factors, including how far along your pregnancy is at the time of the scan and your body shape.

If the scan is done along the abdomen, you will be asked to take a few cups of water before you arrive so your bladder is full. This makes it easier to see inside the uterus.

The sonographer will apply some gel and gently move the ultrasound probe along your abdomen. You might feel some pressure, but the process is not painful.

A small ultrasound probe is lubricated and gently inserted into your vagina if you have a transvaginal ultrasound. It might feel slightly uncomfortable, but usually, it’s not painful. Transvaginal scans are more detailed because the probe is closer to your uterus.

Ultrasounds, including dating scans, do not harm you or your baby or increase the risk of miscarriage.

Benefits of a Dating Scan

Getting a dating scan has numerous benefits, including the following;

Provides valuable health information

Besides determining your estimated due date, a dating scan can also reveal other tidbits of vital information like the development of the baby and even their gender, depending on how far along you are when taking the test. It’s also a great time to do other tests like the nuchal translucency test, which will provide even more information on the unborn baby and help your doctor plan the best way forward for your pregnancy.

It’s reassuring

The early pregnancy ultrasound scan provides a vague picture of the pregnancy. The embryo is still young, and there’s not much to see. During the dating scan, the pregnancy has progressed, and you might hear the heartbeat and identify a few organs. If you have any doubts, a dating scan can help you put those doubts to rest.

It’s crucial to mention that the details you get from the scan depend entirely on the gestation period of the pregnancy. If you get the scan at 13 weeks instead of 8 weeks, the foetus will have more developments for you to see and might even provide an opportunity for the sonographer to make an educated guess of the baby’s gender.

Identifies deformities and anomalies

The purpose of the dating scan is not to check for anomalies and deformities. However, it can reveal any potential problems with the foetus during the scan. Things like the heartbeat and some organs have started forming, and the sonographer can identify potential areas that need more investigation and include such information in your report for you to discuss with your doctor on the best way forward.

Makes planning easier

Knowing when to expect your child can make planning much easier. You know when to make appointments, and your healthcare provider can determine which tests to do at what time. Also, if you plan to renovate the nursery, you will know by when you should prepare it for the newborn.

I have used the this clinic at the recommendation of my friend who had a positive experience. I... have used this clinic looking for reassurance before my gallbladder removal operation. The appointment was quickly booked for the next day to suit my needs. The scan was performed by a very well spoken, professional person. The whole experience was very positive, as expected from a private clinic. From the experience I have had, I can highly recommend this more

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional more

Important Notes

  • Please bring your pregnancy book with previous scan results (if you have had your first NHS scan) to your appointment as we will not be able to scan you without them.
  • All scans are performed to accomplish the main objective only.
  • This scan is not a screening test for fetal abnormalities.
  • Sometimes at the scan, we may not detect the heartbeat or visualise the fetus on the screen. In such instances, this could be because it’s too early for the ultrasound scan to detect the pregnancy or could indicate that a miscarriage has occurred. In the event of this happening, please be reassured that our trained staff are on hand to offer advice and guidance on next steps.
  • Twin / multiple pregnancies incur an additional charge of £45 (12 weeks onwards).
  • For scans with gender assessment included  (16 weeks onwards), any information regarding the sex of the baby is not guaranteed & ultrasound alone is not 100% accurate as some babies can be ambiguous. Your practitioner will only provide you with information about the gender if they feel confident to do so from the ultrasound scan. The Scan Clinic or its staff can not be in any way held responsible upon the reliance of such information.
  • We may require details of your GP / Health Care Professional which will be requested from you before or at the time of your scan.
  • Our pregnancy scans do not replace or substitute any scan you have or will have with the NHS / maternity care provider.

Dating Scan FAQ's

How much is a Dating Scan?

The price of a private dating scan varies depending on where you go. Most clinics advertise costs starting from as little as £100 to £200.

How early should you get a dating scan?

You can get a dating scan from the 8th week of the pregnancy through to the 14th week. Most healthcare providers might recommend between the 11th to the 13th week so you can get the nuchal translucency test along with the dating scan.

What week is best for a dating scan?

If the scan is purely for reassurance, 7-8 weeks is the best time to do the test. The information obtained at this point is more reliable and much easier to interpret. However, your doctor can recommend an early pregnancy scan anytime if you develop symptoms.

What happens during a dating scan?

The process begins with making an appointment. When you arrive, one of our staff members will welcome you and take you to a private room where the scan will take place. We will provide you with appropriate clothing to help you feel comfortable.

Our staff will also explain the procedure to you in simple and easy-to-understand terms. If you have any questions or concerns, we are ready to answer them. If this is a routine scan, we can share information on the best approach for the scan. But if it is a requirement, we will explain the procedure as stipulated by your healthcare provider.

After explaining the procedure, the sonographer will also walk you through the step-by-step process as it happens so there are no surprises. Once complete, we will give you some time to change back into your normal clothes, and someone will update you on when to expect the report.
