What's included in the DVT Scan

DVT Assessment of the deep leg veins using ultrasound with written ultrasound report
Formal written ultrasound report in 24 hours
Expert Care by HCPC & GMC Clinicians
About the DVT Scan
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot develops in one of the deep veins of your body, typically in the legs. These clots can disrupt normal blood flow and pose serious health risks. A clot that forms in a vein or artery and blocks blood circulation is referred to as a thrombus.
A blood clot (thrombus) primarily consists of proteins and platelets. Platelets are a type of blood cell with a vital role in the clotting process. They help stop bleeding by clumping together to form a temporary seal over injured blood vessels.
Objective of the scan
The DVT ultrasound scan of the leg is the most common way to check for a clot in the deep veins of the leg.
Our Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) ultrasound scan aims to evaluate the deep veins and the junction between the deep and superficial veins of the affected leg to detect a DVT using ultrasound.
These veins typically include:
- Femoral vein
- Saphenofemoral junction
- Popliteal vein
- Saphenopopliteal junction.
- Deep calf veins (anterior tibial, posterior tibial and peroneal veins).
Why choose us for your Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT Scan
What brought you here?
Pick the closest match. We'll show what the scan looks for and what usually happens next.
What the scan looks for
Whether the deep calf, popliteal and femoral veins compress normally and fill with colour flow, or contain clot.
What happens next
A verbal summary before you leave and a written report within 24 hours. If a clot is seen we tell you straight away and advise you to seek same-day medical care.
What the scan looks for
Clot in the femoral, popliteal and calf veins after prolonged immobility, and whether flow is obstructed along the leg.
What happens next
A written vascular report within 24 hours for your GP. A suspected DVT is treated as urgent and you are directed to same-day medical assessment.
What the scan looks for
Post-operative clot in the deep leg veins and at the junctions where the superficial veins join the deep system.
What happens next
We explain the findings before you leave and send a written report to you and, if you wish, your surgeon or GP within 24 hours.
What the scan looks for
Deep vein clot as a cause of redness and warmth, plus clot in the superficial veins near the deep junctions.
What happens next
A verbal summary on the day and a written report within 24 hours. If the picture suggests infection rather than clot we advise you to see your GP promptly.
What the scan looks for
New clot alongside older scarred or narrowed vein segments, comparing compressibility and flow with the other leg.
What happens next
A written report within 24 hours describing which segments are affected, for your GP or vascular team to act on.
Please note: This scan looks at the leg veins only, so it can't tell you why a clot formed or check whether one has travelled to the lungs. A suspected pulmonary embolism needs urgent hospital assessment and CT.
Why do I need a DVT Scan?
A DVT scan is typically recommended if symptoms or risk factors suggest the presence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The scan uses sound waves to visualise blood flow and detect blockages that can create problems. It does not use any harmful radiation and is painless making it a safe and effective way to assess for a DVT in the leg.
Common reasons for having this scan include:
Symptoms:
- Swelling
- Pain
- Warmth
- Redness or discolouration in the leg, which may indicate a blood clot.
Risk factors:
- A history of DVT
- recent surgery
- prolonged immobility (such as long flights or bed rest)
- pregnancy
- use of hormone therapy
Preventing complications:
Early detection is essential to prevent serious complications like a pulmonary embolism (PE), where a clot breaks off and travels to the lungs.

Leg VeinsWhat can the DVT Scan detect?
A DVT scan is used to help detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that forms in the deep veins, most commonly in the legs.
This scan helps to identify blockages in blood flow caused by a clot and provides essential information to confirm the presence of DVT in the leg.
It is a crucial diagnostic tool for assessing symptoms like leg pain, swelling, or discolouration.
Ultrasound is the most common imaging technique used to visualise blood flow and detect clots, however, sometimes more advanced imaging techniques like venography or CT scans are required if further investigation is needed.
Benefits of the DVT Scan
The DVT ultrasound scan is a painless procedure that uses ultrasound waves to create an image of the blood vessels inside the legs.
Your doctor or GP may request this scan in which case you can wait to be scheduled in at an NHS facility or you can arrange a prompt private scan at The Scan Clinic. We provide a wide range of private ultrasound scans with numerous benefits, including;
- The DVT scan is safe, non-invasive and painless
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) ultrasound is accurate
- We don’t have a waiting period. You schedule an appointment and have your scan.
- You save time because you don’t have to wait in a queue
- You get the best care from qualified and experienced professionals
- You get an instant verbal summary of your results
- You get a detailed ultrasound results report which you can present to your doctor
- The scans are taken using the latest and most advanced equipment for the best results
- Better comfort and convenience while getting your scan
This scan is a critical tool in assessing symptoms and ensuring proper management of DVT in the leg.
How to prepare
Arriving with the right preparation is important as failure to do so may result in us not being able to perform the scan.
No preparation needed
- No specific preparation is required for this scan.
On the day
During the scan, you will be asked to uncover the area being scanned, hence we advise to wear suitable loose clothing and a small amount of ultrasound gel will be placed over your skin.
An ultrasound camera (‘probe’) will then be placed on top and moved along and around the area. This results in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by the clinical specialist/ medical practitioner.
The ultrasound scan itself usually lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain-free. At the end of the scan, a verbal summary of the results will be provided, as well as your opportunity to ask any questions.
Right after
Your clinician talks you through a verbal summary and answers your questions.
Within 24 hours
A formal written report arrives by email, ready to share with your GP.
If anything needs follow-up
We explain what was seen, the options and who to speak to next.

Common Questions
What does the DVT ultrasound scan include?
The DVT ultrasound scan aims to evaluate the deep veins and the junction between the deep and superficial veins of the affected leg to detect a DVT using ultrasound.
The scan includes an evaluation and a written ultrasound report.
Do I need to have a blood test?
If we suspect or find DVT in your vein, we usually would also recommend a relevant blood test.
What are the risks of a DVT ultrasound
There are no risks or side effects associated with the DVT ultrasound scan. Ultrasound is safe as it does not use any ionising radiation. It is a simple and pain-free procedure.
What is the best test to check for a DVT?
DVT potentially can be serious and you should get medical help urgently if you think you have a DVT.
Ultrasound is the optimal imaging tool used to confirm or exclude the presence of DVT in the leg as it is highly accurate, safe, non-invasive and painless. The veins can be assessed in real-time and results given instantly.
