About the Early Pregnancy Scan

Our early pregnancy scan, also called a first pregnancy 6-week scan or viability scan, is designed to provide you with early reassurance in the first stages of your pregnancy journey.

Typically the early pregnancy scan can be performed if you’re at least 6 weeks pregnant, but can in some instances, be performed earlier. This 6-week scan allows you to check in on your pregnancy to ensure it is progressing well and hopefully see your baby and baby’s heartbeat.

Your First Early Scan at The Scan Clinic

Finding out that you’re pregnant is one of the most memorable moments of your life. The first few weeks are a time of tremendous excitement, and the first scan with the hospital (12-week scan) can feel like a lifetime away. Our first pregnancy scan provides an opportunity to check in on your pregnancy beforehand to ensure all is well. Our London clinic is equipped with the latest high-end ultrasound machines and you can view your scan on our large HD TVs as it happens. Our qualified early pregnancy scan experts have a wealth of experience and either hold or have held NHS roles. You can also bring your partner or guest to your scan and share your unique experience. Your scan will be documented, a report and 2 complimentary scan pictures will be provided.

At Your Early Pregnancy Scan

At your early pregnancy scan, you can also gain insight into how many weeks pregnant you are (gestational age), and if you’re having single pregnancy or multiple pregnancies. It can also how well everything is progressing in the pregnancy. The scan aims to provide information about the viability of the pregnancy and hopefully some peace of mind. Should you require further care, we have excellent links with our colleagues in local early pregnancy units across NHS hospitals.

Viability Scan

This scan will check the viability of the pregnancy. The viability is determined by detecting a fetal heartbeat. Our viability scan from 6 weeks pregnant is an opportunity to see if all is going to plan and is often used for reassurance, particularly if there are concerns. Normally at 6 weeks, we would expect to see a pregnancy sac (gestational sac), a yolk sac and a fetal pole or baby, which looks like a small tadpole at these early stages.

Common Reasons for an Early Baby Pregnancy Scan

If you’re experiencing any vaginal bleeding, vaginal spotting or unusual pelvic pain, an early pregnancy scan can help provide you with peace of mind and find out for certain how your pregnancy is progressing. When you come for your 6-week scan at The Scan Clinic London, we’ll make sure that you feel comfortable, relaxed and well-prepared for the experience. Book online, or if you have any questions or need further information, feel free to drop us a message or call us.

Early Baby Pregnancy Scan London

Pregnancy can be the most exciting journey. But it can also be packed with anxiety and worry. Private ultrasounds are one of the ways healthcare providers and mothers-to-be keep tabs on their unborn children and monitor their development.

During the pregnancy window, your doctor might prescribe several ultrasounds. The most important among them is the early pregnancy scan. Depending on the scan results, it plays various roles and sets the stage for your prenatal care.

Why Get an Early Pregnancy Scan

Early pregnancy scans are not compulsory. In most cases, they are only done when the doctor requests them. However, private pregnancy scan clinics can perform the scan even without authorisation from the doctor and provide you with the report.

An early pregnancy scan takes place between the 6-8 weeks of the pregnancy. It can serve several purposes;

Confirm pregnancy

The greatest reason most mothers-to-be have for taking an early pregnancy scan is to confirm pregnancy. Besides that, the scan will also confirm the number of babies you will be expecting. This is a crucial step in helping the family plan and is also the first time the parents get to meet their unborn child.

Confirm viability

The early pregnancy scan can also include a foetal viability scan which can be done anywhere from the sixth week. This scan is carried out transvaginally at 6 weeks but can be done abdominally from the seventh week. The viability test is crucial for women experiencing pain or bleeding and those with previous miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies.

The viability scan will check on the positioning of the foetus. The embryo should be seen, as well as the foetal heartbeat. However, if the dates are not certain, it may not be possible to see the heart beating in the early scan.

Establish gestational age

An early pregnancy scan can also help determine the gestational age. It might not be entirely accurate, but it gives you and your healthcare provider a good idea of how far along the pregnancy is.

Determine single or multiple amniotic fluids in multiple

If the scan confirms that you’re carrying more than one embryo, the sonographer might also consider checking if the multiples are in different amniotic sacs or the same sac. When the scan is carried out in the 7th week, the placenta and the membrane will be visible to determine whether the foetuses have one or two placentas. This information can help your doctor provide the best prenatal care for you.

Early pregnancy scans are vital for the mother, the doctor and the unborn child. They provide valuable information that can be used throughout the pregnancy. However, you should be cautious about doing multiple early pregnancy scans. A second or third early pregnancy scan, especially vaginally, should only be done on a doctor’s recommendation.

Benefits of Getting an Early Pregnancy Scan

Most early pregnancy ultrasounds are performed for medical reasons. Whether you perform the scan for medical reasons or as a routine, the scan offers numerous benefits, including;

Peace of mind

Most parents-to-be have numerous concerns about the well-being of their baby as soon as they find out they are pregnant. An early pregnancy scan can help rule out fears and assure the parents that their pregnancy is fine. They also act as a tool for early detection, allowing the healthcare provider to provide adequate interventions early for the best results.

See your baby for the first time

Nine months is a long time to wait to see your baby. With an early pregnancy scan, the family can meet their newest addition and follow up on their growth and development throughout the pregnancy period with other scans. This is also an excellent opportunity for you to get your first scan pictures and videos.

Better planning

Taking an early pregnancy scan can help with planning. If you know how many children you’re expecting, you can start making expansion plans and designing the nursery accordingly. The sooner you find out, the more time you have to plan and execute everything as you wait for the due date.

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional help.read more

Important Notes

  • Please bring your pregnancy book with previous scan results (if you have had your first NHS scan) to your appointment as we will not be able to scan you without them.
  • All scans are performed to accomplish the main objective only.
  • This scan is not a screening test for fetal abnormalities.
  • Sometimes at the scan, we may not detect the heartbeat or visualise the fetus on the screen. In such instances, this could be because it’s too early for the ultrasound scan to detect the pregnancy or could indicate that a miscarriage has occurred. In the event of this happening, please be reassured that our trained staff are on hand to offer advice and guidance on next steps.
  • Twin / multiple pregnancies incur an additional charge of £45 (12 weeks onwards).
  • For scans with gender assessment included  (16 weeks onwards), any information regarding the sex of the baby is not guaranteed & ultrasound alone is not 100% accurate as some babies can be ambiguous. Your practitioner will only provide you with information about the gender if they feel confident to do so from the ultrasound scan. The Scan Clinic or its staff can not be in any way held responsible upon the reliance of such information.
  • We may require details of your GP / Health Care Professional which will be requested from you before or at the time of your scan.
  • Our pregnancy scans do not replace or substitute any scan you have or will have with the NHS / maternity care provider.

Early Pregnancy Scan FAQ's

How much is an early pregnancy scan in London?

Private early pregnancy scans in London can cost as little as £125. However, the actual price will vary depending on the type of scan and the nature of the investigations required for the scan.

How early can you have an early pregnancy scan?

You can safely have an early pregnancy scan as early as 6 weeks. At this stage, the sonographer can see the embryo, its positioning, the number of embryos and whether they share the same amniotic fluid. Small electrical pulses of the heartbeat can also be detected in some cases.

What if my scan shows there’s something wrong, or I receive bad news?

We have experienced imaging staff that have handled similar cases in the past. We are cautious about how we break such news. If medical intervention is necessary, we will advise on the same and provide a detailed report that you can present to your healthcare provider for the next best course of action.

Are your sonographers qualified?

We use the most qualified sonographers in London. We understand that the best scans combine quality ultrasound equipment and skilled sonographers who can easily and quickly interpret the information the equipment provides. All our sonographers have undergone relevant training and certification per the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education in the UK.

Is an early pregnancy scan safe for adults and babies?

Ultrasound scans aren’t known to have any negative side effects on the mother-to-be or the unborn child. Unlike X-rays, they don’t produce any radiation and are largely safe. However, a qualified and certified sonographer should only perform the scan for the best results. In fact, an early pregnancy scan is highly recommended. It helps confirm the pregnancy and its viability, among other vital details that healthcare providers need to provide comprehensive prenatal care.
