The elbow scan aims to provide a detailed assessment of the significant musculoskeletal structures in the elbow and the forearm using ultrasound. The elbow is an intricate joint in the body, made up of a number of tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. Sometimes these tissues can become damaged and cause various symptoms including pain and swelling. The elbow scan uses ultrasound waves to see inside the elbow and forearm to look at these structures. It is a quick and painless test that is completely safe. The results of the elbow scan are discussed with you following the scan.
The elbow ultrasound scan can assess:
- Extensor tendons
- Flexor tendons
- Elbow ligaments
- Elbow joint
- Biceps tendon
- Triceps tendon
- Olecranon space and bursa
What is the Elbow Ultrasound
An elbow ultrasound scan is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the structures inside the elbow joint. It can be used to evaluate the tendons, ligaments, and muscles in the elbow, as well as the bones, cartilage, and fluid in the joint. Elbow joint injuries are common in adults, particularly athletes. These injuries can be short-term (acute) or long-term (Chronic). Acute injuries could be caused by sudden traumatic events such as falls or accidents. Chronic injuries are usually due to repetitive microtrauma to the area, however, in some instances may also be a consequence of an acute injury.
Why do I need a Elbow Ultrasound
You may need to have an elbow ultrasound scan for one or more of the following reasons;
- Elbow injury: Foot ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate injuries such as sprains and tendonitis.
- Elbow pain
- Reduced elbow movement
- Elbow discomfort
- Elbow Inflammation
- Elbow lump
- Elbow swelling
- Post-surgical complications e.g. abscess, oedema
- Monitor rheumatoid arthritis.
- Check for foreign bodies such as glass or metal particles that may have lodged in the soft tissues.
What can the Elbow Ultrasound detect?
Our elbow ultrasound can be used to diagnose a wide range of conditions affecting the elbow joint, including:
- Inflammation: ultrasound scan can be used to diagnose tendinitis, which is inflammation of the tendons in the elbow. Tendinitis can be caused by repetitive motions, such as throwing a baseball or tennis ball, or by overuse of the elbow. The elbow ultrasound can also show inflammation and thickening of the tendons. It can also detect bursitis, which is inflammation of the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac) in the elbow. Bursitis can be caused by overuse or injury and can cause pain and swelling in the elbow. The ultrasound can show inflammation and fluid buildup in the bursa.
- Muscle tears
- Tennis Elbow – pain in and around the outside of the elbow
- Golfer Elbow – pain in and around the inside of the elbow
- Sprains & Tears
- Restricted movement
- Over Use Injury
- Infections
- Traumatic injury
- Joint Dislocation
- Arthritis: a degenerative condition that can cause pain and stiffness in the elbow joint. The ultrasound can show degeneration of the cartilage and bony changes in the joint.
- Monitor the progress of treatment for conditions such as tendinitis and bursitis.
- Nerve Pain
Benefits of having the Elbow Ultrasound
The test is painless, safe, and can be done quickly. Your doctor may require an elbow ultrasound scan along with other imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI to plan the best treatment. Ultrasonography is a noninvasive imaging modality and is widely used for the assessment of the elbow and forearm joints. It can provide clinically useful information on a wide range of conditions affecting the elbow joint, including the tendons, ligaments, muscles, synovial space, articular cartilage, and surrounding soft tissues.
Opting for an elbow ultrasound over other diagnostic procedures has numerous benefits, such as:
Non-invasive and safe
Unlike other imaging techniques, such as X-rays or CT scans, elbow ultrasound doesn’t expose the patient to harmful ionising radiation. This makes it a safer option, especially in instances where repeated imaging might be needed or for individuals who are more susceptible to radiation-related risks, such as children and pregnant women.
Ultrasounds are also relatively comfortable. They don’t involve any piercing or injections, and most people have no problem taking an ultrasound scan. You will only need to lift your sleeves to expose the elbow, and the sonographer will apply a special gel to get on with the ultrasound. It is a painless and straightforward process.
Real-time visualisation
Another major benefit of an elbow ultrasound scan over other imaging methods is the ability to visualise the elbow joint in real time. Medical professionals can observe the structures while they are in motion, which can provide valuable insight into any dysfunctional movement or abnormalities, resulting in a better and more accurate diagnosis.
The same real-time visualisation benefits of ultrasound scans are applicable during treatment delivery. The medical professional can monitor the placement of the needle to ensure they are delivering the medication to the correct location for the best result.
High precision and detail
Elbow ultrasound scans have become increasingly accurate and detailed. With the advanced technology currently available, the scan has exceptional resolution, allowing clinicians to identify even the slightest and most subtle abnormalities, such as tears in tendons, inflammation, or fluid accumulation.
The detailed images obtained also contribute to precise diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment plans efficiently and effectively. Providing unrivalled detail and clarity makes it easier for medical professionals to make the right diagnosis and treatment.
Cost-effective
Elbow ultrasound scans are relatively more affordable than other imaging modalities like MRI or CT scans. They can be performed in clinics and alternative facilities, bypassing the need for costly hospital visits that often involve consultation visits and extended stays. The cost-effectiveness of elbow ultrasound makes them accessible to a wider range of patients and streamlines the diagnostic process.
No special preparation is needed
Elbow ultrasounds don’t require any additional preparations to be conducted. Patients do not need to fast or undergo special dietary restrictions before the procedure. This convenience adds to the overall patient experience and eliminates any unnecessary anxiety or inconvenience that may arise from the complex preparation.
The lack of special preparations also allows patients to get the ultrasound scan on short notice when needed for a more accurate and precise diagnosis.
Versatile and comprehensive
Elbow ultrasound scans can provide a comprehensive assessment of various conditions. Some of the conditions that can be diagnosed using an elbow ultrasound include, but not limited to:
- Golfer’s or tennis elbow
- Elbow bursitis
- Ligament and tendon tears
- Arthritis
- Tumours or cysts within the elbow joint
- Inflammation or fluid accumulation
