About the Fertility Scan

A fertility scan is crucial when investigating your fertility and reproductive health. The scan looks at the uterus, ovaries and the surrounding areas to establish if there is an underlying gynaecological problem which may hinder your chances of conceiving naturally or get in the way of your fertility treatment path. The scan also provides information about your egg count or follicle activity.

Whether you’re considering having children or getting a routine check-up, a fertility scan is one of the first tests your healthcare provider will ask for. This scan is also the first test that any woman experiencing difficulty conceiving. It provides vital information on the health and status of the uterus and the ovaries. It can help diagnose various conditions, including ovarian cysts, fibroids and other reproductive organ abnormalities and is used to monitor various fertility treatments to ensure things are going to plan.

Objective of the Fertility Scan

Our detailed fertility scan uses a high-resolution transvaginal ultrasound scanning to not only assess the general gynaecological health of the female reproductive organs but also potential issues which could impact fertility. The scan is currently regarded as one of the best and safest methods to check your ovarian reserve (egg count).

The fertility ultrasound test is performed using transvaginal ultrasound scanning. It can provide information about your womb (uterus), the lining of your womb (endometrium thickness/structure) and your overall ovarian health including your ovarian reserve and follicles (egg count). The results of the fertility scan are briefly explained to you following the test and a detailed fertility ultrasound report is sent to your email typically within 24 hours. We also have a same-day ‘priority’ reporting service should you require your results sooner*.

Our fertility ultrasound test will check the overall health of the uterus and ovaries and check for potential issues which could impact your fertility. Examples of potential problems include a low egg count or ovarian reserve, fibroids and ovarian cysts.

Why do I need a Fertility Scan

A fertility scan is an essential tool for checking the health of the female reproductive organs. It is critical for monitoring fertility treatments such as IVF and is recommended if are considering or are about to undergo any kind of fertility treatment.

Many women struggle with infertility in the UK. Infertility can be caused by various factors and can have various signs including;

  • Pain during sex
  • Back pain
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Bowel problems or pain with bowel movements
  • Irregular periods and spotting

If you have any of these symptoms, your may benefit from a fertility scan to assess;

  • The uterus
  • Ovaries
  • Endometrium (womb lining)
  • Measurement of follicles (for fertility)
  • Ovulation time estimation
  • Pelvis

Different types of fertility ultrasounds serve different purposes. Some possible reasons for getting a scan include the following;

  • Follicle tracking for assisted conception cycles
  • Accurately predicting ovulation
  • Helping time embryo transfers
  • Predicting optimum time for fertilisation
  • Identifying the cause of pelvic pain, irregular periods or other menstrual problems
  • Evaluating reproductive health before conception
  • Assisting doctors with treatment

Some common reasons for the fertility ultrasound include:

  • Primary infertility
  • Secondary infertility
  • Low AMH or ovarian reserve
  • Abnormal female hormone tests e.g. PCOS
  • Determine fertility health of the reproductive organs
  • Determine ovarian reserve or egg count
  • Determine follicular activity
  • Under-going fertility treatment in the UK or abroad such as IVF/ ICSI
  • Considering fertility treatment in the UK or abroad such as IVF / ICSI
  • To find out more about your fertility health
  • As part of a gynaecology health assessment
  • The general well-being of the reproductive organs.
  • Pelvic pain
  • Irregular, frequent or absent periods or other menstrual problems
  • Investigate endometrial lining
  • Check for fibroids or ovarian cysts or polycystic ovaries
  • Follow-up scan to monitor known conditions
  • Reassurance and peace of mind
  • General gynaecology check-up

Fertility scans are done trans-vaginally using a specially designed ultrasound probe. Among other things, the scan checks the size, shape and condition of the uterus, finds out when you will be ovulating, checks the individual follicles in your ovaries, measures and tracks follicles to ensure they’re developing as expected, and checks your reproductive system for problems like cysts and polyps.

A full medical report of the examination and findings are included with the scan. Images may also be available if required at additional fee.

What does the Fertility Scan involve?

During the scan, you will be asked to uncover the area being scanned, hence we advise to wear suitable loose clothing and a small amount of ultrasound gel will be placed over your skin.

An ultrasound camera (‘probe’) will then be placed on top and moved along and around the area. This results in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by the clinical specialist/ medical practitioner.

The ultrasound scan itself usually lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain-free. At the end of the scan, a verbal summary of the results will be provided, as well as your opportunity to ask any questions.

How do I prepare*

It's really important to arrive with the correct preparation as failure to do so may result in us not being able to perform the scan.

Internal Scan*

  • An internal (Transvaginal) scan is recommended or may be mandatory for specific services instead of the scan over your tummy as it often provides greater detail and better information, please ask our customer care team for more information.

  • For internal scans you do not need to have a full bladder and will be asked to empty your bladder if full. Also please do arrive in clothing that can allow easy and comfortable access to your pelvic area.

  • For scans over your tummy (Transabdominal) then we recommend you arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Please drink 0.5 litres of clear fluid approximately 30 minutes or so before your scheduled appointment and kindly try your best not to empty your bladder before the examination.
  • Please refer to the patient information guide by clicking here.

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional more

Fertility Scan FAQ's

How much is a fertility scan in the UK?

The cost of a fertility scan in the UK varies depending on the requirements and type of fertility scan. On average, the price ranges from £150 to £300.

What is a fertility scan?

A fertility scan is a diagnostic tool used to check a woman’s reproductive organs and verify they are present. The scan can serve various functions depending on the type of scan.

What kind of scan is done for infertility?

An ultrasound scan is one of the scans you need to do for infertility. The scan is minimally invasive and helps create a basis for future tests and imaging.

When should you get a fertility scan?

You should get a fertility scan if you and your partner are trying to conceive without success. It’s also recommended to get the scan annually if you’re sexually active and under the age of 35 and bi-annually if you are over 35 years.

What are the 4 causes of female infertility?

The four main causes of female infertility are 1. Their biological clock, 2. Smoking, 3. Weight (being overweight or underweight affects ovulation and reduces chances of conceiving) 4. Alcohol

Can ultrasound tell if you're infertile?

Yes and no. If the cause of infertility is structural, it can be viewed on the scan. But for other causes, additional testing is necessary to confirm the cause of infertility.

Can a scan show blocked fallopian tubes?

It is possible to view blocked fallopian tubes on an ultrasound. Naturally, the tubes are thin and can’t be seen on the scan. But when they’re blocked, they fill with fluid making them visible on the scan.

What are the signs of blocked fallopian tubes?

Signs of a blocked fallopian tube include abdominal pain and unusual vaginal discharge. Also, the tubes may be filled with fluid making them visible on the ultrasound.

Are fertility checks worth it?

Routine fertility checks aren’t necessary for healthy couples. However, a check can help clear any doubts and help you tackle any potential issues before trying to conceive.

Will I get the written results the same day?

Your clinician will go through your results verbally following your scan and a written report is sent to you within 24 hours. However, if you require the results sooner we can expedite the results so you receive them on the same day for a small additional fee.
