About the Growth Scan

Being pregnant is an exhilarating experience, but of course, it’s likely that you’ll sometimes feel worried about the health of your baby. It’s very natural to feel this way; after all, this is a very special time for you, and you’re keen to welcome your healthy child into the world.

A growth scan is a non-invasive ultrasound that provides expectant parents with vital information about the growth and development of their babies and a chance to catch a glimpse of the little one during the third trimester.

A growth scan can give you peace of mind or a chance to connect with your baby whether you’re having a normal pregnancy or have concerns.

If you’d like additional peace of mind or reassurance, why not check up on the progression of your baby with our private growth scan? Growth scans are a safe method to ensure the pregnancy progresses well in the second and third trimesters.

Our private growth scan provides a comprehensive assessment of your baby’s size, weight, and development. We will also evaluate the amniotic fluid levels and check the placental position. To top it all off, a complimentary gender confirmation scan is included if you wish to confirm the sex of your baby. You’ll receive personalised results outlining your baby’s measurements and estimated weight which you can place in your maternity folder and share with your midwife.

What is a Growth Scan?

A growth scan is an ultrasound that evaluates your baby’s development during the last trimester. It measures the little one’s growth and progress.

The scan is usually performed between weeks 24 and 40 of your pregnancy journey and can provide important information about the baby’s size and overall health.

The scan is typically a reassurance scan but may be recommended for parents-to-be who’ve had a history of premature delivery, gestational diabetes or other health concerns that could affect the baby.

During the scan, the sonographer will measure parts of the baby to evaluate their size, weight and overall growth. These measurements include:

  • Head Circumference
  • Abdominal circumference
  • The length of the thighbone

These measurements are used to calculate the baby’s weight. This is also referred to as the estimated foetal weight. The sonographer compares these measurements to standardised growth charts to determine if the baby’s growth is within the expected range depending on the gestational period.

Using the growth scan helps monitor the baby and identify any potential issues or abnormalities early, which allows for appropriate management and intervention. However, the scan is not a standalone diagnostic tool. Should any issues arise, additional scans and testing may be necessary.

What to Expect During a Growth Scan?

Anytime you go into a scan clinic, it can be an anxious time. That is why it helps to know what to expect when going in for the growth scan.

Preparing for the Scan

A full bladder before the scan is necessary for clearer images, especially when you intend to take the scan in the second trimester. However, in some instances, late in the second and third trimesters, a full bladder may not be necessary.

It might also help to wear something loose, preferably a top and trousers for easier access without fully undressing.

The Scan

During your appointment at our clinic, you will be asked to lie down on an examination couch, and a unique, clear gel will be applied to your tummy. The gel acts as a lubricant to help the ultrasound probe make better contact with your skin and allows the sound to pass into the abdomen.

The transducer, as it’s also known, is moved back and forth to obtain images of the baby. The scan is not painful but mildly uncomfortable because we may need to press into your tummy to get clearer images.

What Will You Find in a Growth Scan?

The growth scan can provide substantial information. Some of the common things that can be observed include:

Foetal Size and Growth

The main reason to have a growth scan is to check the size and growth of the foetus. Various measurements are taken during the scan, such as head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. These can help determine the baby’s growth and whether it is within the expected range for its gestational age.

Estimated Foetal Weight

We use specialised calculators to estimate the baby’s weight based on the measurements taken during the scan. This can help assess whether the baby is growing appropriately and whether there are concerns about growth restriction or excessive growth.

Placenta Position

During the growth scan, we also determine the placenta’s position. This is important for assessing potential complications, such as when the placenta covers the cervix. The scan may also check if the placenta is working well.

Amniotic Fluid Levels

During the growth scan, we also evaluate the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. Too little or too much amniotic fluid can indicate potential issues that may affect the baby’s well-being.

The scan also determines the baby’s position in the womb, including whether it is head-down or breech. This information advises on the method of delivery.

How Accurate are Growth Scans?

Growth scans are considered an accurate and reliable tool for assessing foetal development and growth. However, some limitations can affect their accuracy, such as:

  • Gestational age estimation: The growth scan’s accuracy depends on the gestational age’s accurate estimation. Irregular menstrual cycles or uncertain dates of conception can affect the accuracy of the growth scan.
  • Foetal cooperation: The position of the foetus during the scan can impact the ability to obtain accurate measurements.
  • Maternal factors: Maternal obesity is one factor that can affect the quality of the scan, making it harder to see the baby and obtain accurate measurements.

I have used the this clinic at the recommendation of my friend who had a positive experience. I... have used this clinic looking for reassurance before my gallbladder removal operation. The appointment was quickly booked for the next day to suit my needs. The scan was performed by a very well spoken, professional person. The whole experience was very positive, as expected from a private clinic. From the experience I have had, I can highly recommend this more

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional more

Important Notes

  • Please bring your pregnancy book with previous scan results (if you have had your first NHS scan) to your appointment as we will not be able to scan you without them.
  • All scans are performed to accomplish the main objective only.
  • This scan is not a screening test for fetal abnormalities.
  • Sometimes at the scan, we may not detect the heartbeat or visualise the fetus on the screen. In such instances, this could be because it’s too early for the ultrasound scan to detect the pregnancy or could indicate that a miscarriage has occurred. In the event of this happening, please be reassured that our trained staff are on hand to offer advice and guidance on next steps.
  • Twin / multiple pregnancies incur an additional charge of £45 (12 weeks onwards).
  • For scans with gender assessment included  (16 weeks onwards), any information regarding the sex of the baby is not guaranteed & ultrasound alone is not 100% accurate as some babies can be ambiguous. Your practitioner will only provide you with information about the gender if they feel confident to do so from the ultrasound scan. The Scan Clinic or its staff can not be in any way held responsible upon the reliance of such information.
  • We may require details of your GP / Health Care Professional which will be requested from you before or at the time of your scan.
  • Our pregnancy scans do not replace or substitute any scan you have or will have with the NHS / maternity care provider.
