Objective of the Hand Scan

The hand scan aims to provide a detailed assessment of the significant musculoskeletal structures in the hand using ultrasound. The hand is an extraordinary part of the body made of a number of structures including muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. The hand scan uses ultrasound waves to see inside the hand and look at these structures. It is a quick and painless test that is completely safe. The results of the hand scan are discussed with you following the scan.

The hand scan can assess:

  • Hand injury
  • Finger joints
  • Thumb joint
  • Hand tendons & ligaments
  • Abnormal fluid or inflammation around the hand, fingers or thumb
  • Lumps on the hand
  • Swelling of the hand, fingers or thumb
  • Injury to the hand, fingers or thumb

What is the Hand Scan

A hand ultrasound scan is a diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the structures inside the wrist joint. It can be used to evaluate the tendons, ligaments, and muscles in the hand, as well as the bones, nerves and fluid in the joints.  Hand problems and injuries are common in adults, particularly following an injury or overuse.  These injuries can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). Acute injuries could be caused by sudden traumatic events such as falls or accidents. Chronic injuries are usually due to repetitive microtrauma to the area, however, in some instances may also be a consequence of an acute injury. A scan of the hand can be used to quickly and safely examine the hand to check for any potential problems.

Human hands are complex and delicate structures containing over 20 bones, numerous muscles and joints that allow for robust, precise and dextrous movements. But they are also vulnerable to injuries, which can cause wrist and hand pain. Some common hand problems that could cause pain and discomfort include carpal tunnel, arthritis, tendinopathy, ligament damage, trigger finger, and tendon contracture,

Hand ultrasounds can diagnose many conditions that affect the hand and wrist. The scan uses sound waves to create an image of the structures inside the hand, such as muscles and tendons. The information from these images can be used in diagnosing various hand-related conditions.

Why do I need a Hand Scan

You may need to have a hand scan for one or more of the following reasons;

  • Hand injury: Foot ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate injuries such as sprains and tendonitis.
  • Hand pain
  • Pain in the fingers
  • Pain in or around your thumb
  • Pain in the hand joints
  • Stiffness in the hand joints
  • Reduced hand movement
  • Hand discomfort
  • Tingling or loss of sensation in the hand or fingers
  • Numbness in the hand or fingers

There are many reasons to get a hand scan. But the main one is determining the cause of hand pain and discomfort. The pain can originate in different parts of the complex skeletal structure of the hands, including the bones, joints, connective tissues, tendons and nerves.

Some of the common reasons for a hand scan are;

  • Pain
  • Reduced movement
  • Osteo or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Swelling
  • Ganglion cyst
  • Discomfort
  • Inflammation
  • Muscular tendinous and ligamentous damage
  • Foreign bodies
  • Joint effusions
  • Soft tissue masses such as lipomas
  • Classification of a mass
  • Post-surgical complications
  • Relationship of normal anatomy and pathology to each other
  • Some bony pathology

The ultrasound can be recommended by a doctor, but the recommendation is not compulsory for this type of scan. You can schedule an appointment for a hand scan if you notice wrist and finger joint pains, reduced range of movements, signs of inflammation and fluid, lumps, masses and tumours or other abnormalities and causes of concern.

  • Hand Inflammation (tenosynovitis)
  • Hand lump
  • Hand swelling
  • Post-surgical complications e.g. abscess, oedema
  • Monitor rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Check for foreign bodies such as glass or metal particles that may have lodged in the soft tissues.

What can the Hand Scan detect?

Our hand ultrasound scans are used to assess for common injuries to the hand which can include:

Benefits of having the Hand Scan

The test is painless, safe, and can be done quickly. Your doctor may require a hand ultrasound scan along with other imaging tests such as an X-ray or MRI to plan the best treatment. Ultrasonography is a noninvasive imaging modality and is widely used for the assessment of the hand, fingers and thumb including the joints. It can provide clinically useful information on a wide range of conditions affecting the hand, including the tendons, ligaments, muscles, synovial space, articular cartilage, and surrounding soft tissues.

Getting a private hand ultrasound scan has many benefits. For starters, private scan clinics like ours don’t have a long wait list, which allows you to get the scan faster, put your worries to rest, and, if there’s something wrong, get timely medical attention. Some of the other benefits of a private hand ultrasound include;

  • High-res digital images – Private scan clinics use the latest and most advanced ultrasound equipment, ensuring high-resolution imagery of your hand that makes it easy to identify potential health and structural problems in your hand. As part of the scan package, you receive a detailed report and images of your scan that you can share with your healthcare specialist for further medical attention.
  • Same-day results – Most private hand scan clinics can provide you with verbal results as you leave the clinic and official results within 24-48 hours. Considering time is of the essence in all health cases, getting your results sooner could prove vital in providing timely medical intervention.

Hand Scan FAQ's

What is a Hand Scan?

A hand scan is a non-invasive ultrasound scan used to diagnose various hand and wrist conditions. During a hand ultrasound, a technician (sonographer_ places a hand-held device on the patient’s skin. The device sends sound waves into the body, bouncing off the structures inside the hand and returning to the device. The device translates the sound waves and converts them into a digital image that details the structures inside the hand.

The purpose of the hand ultrasound is to evaluate your hand anatomy. The scan looks at the following;

  • Finger flexor
  • Tendons
  • Tendon health
  • Pulleys
  • Palmar fascia
  • Ulnar collateral ligament

What is the cost of a private hand scan in London?

The cost of a hand scan in London varies depending on the private scan clinic you visit and the nature of the scan. Our hand scans start at £160 at The Scan Clinic for ultrasound scans only.

What will an ultrasound of the wrist show?

A wrist scan provides detailed information on the condition of the tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves and vessels around the wrist. The scan can show abnormalities such as masses and tumours around the wrist, among other potential problems that could cause pain and discomfort around the wrist.

How long does a hand ultrasound take?

The duration of the scan can vary widely depending on the investigation in question. In cases of rheumatological changes, the wrist and each finger are assessed separately, in which case the scan could take up to 50 minutes to complete. Most other scan usually take about 10-20 minutes.

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional help.read more
