About the Private Testicular Scan

During the scan you will be asked to uncover your scrotal area. A small amount of jelly will be placed over your scrotum. An ultrasound camera will then be placed on top and moved along. This will result in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by a medical ultrasound practitioner. The examination itself usually lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain free. At the end of the examination a brief explanation of the results may be offered. A formal ultrasound scan report with any recommendations will be sent to you which you can take to your regular healthcare professional.

A testicular scan, scrotum or scrotal ultrasound is a non-invasive medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound to create detailed images of the testicles.

The scrotal scan is painless and provides an effective way to examine the testicles and the surrounding tissues.

A testicular ultrasound scan works the same way as other scan. It involves using a transducer that sends sound waves into the testes or scrotal area, which bounce off the tissues to create echoes converted into images.

Using the testicular scan, your healthcare provider can obtain important information about the health of the testicles.

During the scan, you will be required to lie on your back on an examination table. The technician will apply a gel on your scrotum, press the transducer against it, and move it across the skin. It doesn’t hurt, but you may feel some pressure.

Objective of the Private Testicular Scan

The purpose of the private testicular ultrasound scan is to provide an assessment of the scrotum including testicles, epididymides & area around testicles by using ultrasound.

This may be because you / your health care professional can feel a lump in the scrotum e.g. epididymal cyst or perhaps you are experiencing pain or discomfort in the testicular area possibly due to an infection such as epididymitis or due to swollen testicular veins (varicocele). Alternatively, there may be a concern about testicular cancer and you have been referred for a testicular scan by your doctor but are unwilling to wait. Even if it’s just for reassurance and peace of mind, whatever the case maybe we would be happy to assist and can book your scan with minimal waiting and speedy results.

What can the Private Testicular Scan detect?

A testicular ultrasound serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying a range of disorders affecting the testicles. This imaging technique is adept at detecting conditions such as abscesses, infections, or inflammation in the testes or the epididymis, which may arise from various causes including injury, infection, or inflammation itself. It is particularly useful for assessing blood flow within the testicles, offering vital insights into the health and functioning of the tissue.

Moreover, the ultrasound can reveal the presence of cysts and tumors, distinguishing between benign and malignant growths. Fluid buildup, known as hydroceles, which occurs when fluid accumulates in the sac surrounding the testicle, can also be identified. It helps in diagnosing scrotal hernias, a condition where part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall into the scrotum, and varicoceles, which are swollen veins in the scrotum that might affect fertility.

Additionally, the technique is instrumental in detecting early signs of testicular cancer, including lumps or masses within the testicles, and assessing testicular size abnormalities, thereby identifying testes that are smaller or larger than the typical size. Through these capabilities, a testicular ultrasound provides a comprehensive evaluation of testicular health and aids in the early detection and management of various testicular conditions.

Ultrasound has had a substantial impact on diagnostic healthcare. Its ability to provide clear, real-time images is among the reasons ultrasound is an excellent diagnostic tool. Additionally, ultrasound scans have been used in various treatment options, including ultrasound-guided cortisone injections, among others.

The scans can also be used to assess and diagnose abnormalities in the testicles and have increasingly been used as part of routine check-ups or for detailed analysis and investigations into various testicular conditions.

Benefits of having the Private Testicular Scan

Your healthcare provider or urologist may request a testicular scan if they suspect a testicular torsion or other abnormalities in the testes. Some of these conditions require urgent medical care and surgery; timely scanning and results are crucial.

Opting for a private testicular ultrasound provides numerous benefits, such as;

  • Timely scanning – Private testicular scan clinics don’t have the lengthy wait times of NHS facilities. You can get the testicular scan within the shortest time possible, allowing for rapid medical interventions. This is particularly vital in cases where time is a critical factor.
  • Hi-resolution imaging – Private clinics invest in the latest ultrasound equipment and the most qualified sonographers, allowing for detailed, high-resolution images that provide vital information and details that allow you and your healthcare to make informed decisions.
  • Accuracy – Private testicular ultrasounds are incredibly accurate and help differential conditions in the testicular area. Besides highlighting growths, the scan can also differentiate the content of the masses, making it easier to make the right diagnosis.

Why do I need a Private Testicular Scan

Several reasons might necessitate the need to get a testicular scan;

  • You might need a testicular scan if you recently suffered trauma to your scrotum and are suffering from pain and discomfort. The scan can help to determine the outcome of the trauma.
  • The scan can also be used to verify whether a lump in your scrotum or testicles is solid (which indicates a tumour) or filled with fluid (indicating a cyst).
  • You might also need a testicular scan to investigate a possible testicular torsion, a twisted spermatic cord restricting blood flow to your testicles.
  • The scan can help identify sources of pain or swelling in your testicles
  • It can help detect and evaluate varicoceles, which are varicose veins within the scrotum
  • Testicular scans are also used to identify the location of an undescended testicle

Testicular scans, like standard ultrasounds, have no known risks, which makes them an excellent choice for patients and healthcare providers. Unlike X-rays, you have no exposure risk to ionising radiation, and the scan can be carried out longer or multiple times without any health hazards.

What does the Private Testicular Scan involve?

During the scan, you will be asked to uncover the area being scanned, hence we advise to wear suitable loose clothing and a small amount of ultrasound gel will be placed over your skin.

An ultrasound camera (‘probe’) will then be placed on top and moved along and around the area. This results in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by the clinical specialist/ medical practitioner.

The ultrasound scan itself usually lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain-free. At the end of the scan, a verbal summary of the results will be provided, as well as your opportunity to ask any questions.

How do I prepare*

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional help.read more
