What is the objective of an Ultrasound Guided Injection?
The objective of an ultrasound guided injection is to inject a Corticosteroid into a joint or area of the body with the aid of ultrasound as a way to see and visualise the joint/ body area as well as the needle to allow it to reach the target area as precisely as possible.
Corticosteroid injections are used to treat a range of musculoskeletal pain conditions ranging from osteoarthritis, inflammatory diseases and a wide range of commonly occurring conditions such as tendinopathic disorders and nerve impingement. These injections are ideally administered with the aid of ultrasound guidance as the target area can be precisely located and injected, allowing for optimal chance of success.
What is the benefit of an Ultrasound Guided Injection?
Corticosteroid injections (CSI) are used to manage and treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions to help relieve pain and inflammation. Ultrasound guided injections are the gold standard method of performing these injections.
When comparing ultrasound guided injections to blind injections there is strong evidence to show that ultrasound guided injections can give better results for pain relief, longevity and functionally as compared to blind injections. Furthermore from a safety perspective there is a reduced risk in injury by the procedure as the needle movement and target area are being visualised in real time using ultrasound.
Private Ultrasound Guided Injection FAQ's
What does a Private Ultrasound Guided Injection involve?
Our experts will normally conduct a brief history along with a physical examination following by an ultrasound scan of the area in question to help assess your problem. We will proceed with an ultrasound guided injection if it’s agreed that it is the best and most appropriate treatment for you.
During the scan you will be asked to uncover that area (e.g. shoulder, knee, etc.) and a small amount of jelly will be placed over your skin. An ultrasound camera will then be placed on top and moved around the area. This will result in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by the ultrasound practitioner. The ultrasound probe will be then be placed at the intended injection site and a small amount of numbing medicine is then injected around the area for pain relief. This is followed by the steroid injection which is guided into the specific area by the ultrasound picture on the screen.
Typically only one injections is required however depending on your specific clinical history and presentation, we may recommend two or three, however this will be discussed with you at your appointment.
At the end of the procedure you will be required to stay in the waiting room for around 15-20 minutes after which you may leave.
A detailed consultation letter with any further recommendations will sent to you via secure email which you can take to your regular healthcare professional.

Does a Private Ultrasound Guided Injection hurt?
The ultrasound scan itself a harmless and painless procedure where jelly and an ultrasound probe are placed on the skin. Prior to the steroid injection a numbing medicine is applied to the area of interest to minimise any pain, however there may be a little discomfort as the needle is moving into the target area and steroid is being injected.
How much does a it cost?
The cost of a consultation, single ultrasound scan with one ultrasound guided injection is £24, however will cost more should further areas/scans or injections be required.
If the decision is made at the appointment not to proceed with injection, you will be only charged the cost of the consultation and or diagnostic ultrasound scan. For all queries please contact our customer care team or click the booking link below.
Who should have an ultrasound guided injection?
Ultrasound guided injections are typically used for pain in the soft tissues. This can be arthritis of a joint or a bursitis or impingement problem. The Scan Clinic offers a one-stop shop for injections using corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid. Each of these can be used for a wide range of soft tissue disorders to help reduce pain and improve function.
How is the treatment delivered and how many injections do I need?
The ultrasound guided injection will be delivered by one of our advanced physiotherapists, who will assess your problems, perform an ultrasound scan and if it is appropriate proceed to perform an ultrasound guided injection. Most injection procedures only require a single injection, however, there are situations where you may require more than one injection, e.g., a frozen shoulder may require two to three injections each around six to eight weeks apart.
What are the potential side effects?
Any procedure carries its own potential risks and side effects and the decision to go ahead must balance these risks with the potential benefits. There may be specific risks specific to you based on your condition/ medical history which will be discussed at your appointment.
To help we have created a patient information page, which outline potential risks and side effects associated with the specific injection that you are booking in for.
