About the Urine Test – Microscopy & Culture
A Urine Microscopy and Culture test analyses a urine sample to check for presence of infection, abnormal cells, or other substances. It is commonly ordered when a urinary tract infection (UTI) or other urinary issues are suspected. Here’s a breakdown of the test:
Urine Microscopy:
- Microscopy involves examining the urine sample under a microscope to identify elements such as:
- Bacteria: Signs of infection.
- White Blood Cells (WBCs): Indicate infection or inflammation in the urinary tract.
- Red Blood Cells (RBCs): May suggest bleeding in the urinary tract.
- Epithelial Cells: These cells line the urinary tract; large numbers can indicate contamination or certain diseases.
- Casts: Structures formed in the kidney that may indicate kidney disease.
- Crystals: May suggest kidney stones or metabolic disorders.
Urine Culture:
- Culture involves growing any bacteria found in the urine sample in a lab to identify the specific type of bacteria causing an infection.
- Bacteria Growth: If bacteria grow, this confirms a UTI or other bacterial infection.
- Antibiotic Sensitivity: Once the bacteria are identified, further testing is done to determine which antibiotics will effectively treat the infection (antibiotic susceptibility testing).
Why choose us for your Urine Test
Why is a Urine Test performed?
Urine Microscopy and Culture test is typically ordered when you may have any symptoms such as:
- Painful urination
- Frequent urination
- Blood in the urine
- Lower abdominal pain
It helps diagnose infections, kidney issues, and other urinary disorders.
What we test
This urine test includes the following. Open any section for detail.
Urine Culture
Urine culture aims to isolate and identify the specific bacteria causing an infection
Urine Microscopy
Urine microscopy is a laboratory test that examines urine under a microscope to detect and quantify solid components like cells, bacteria, and crystals, helping diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney disease, or blood disorders.
How to prepare
To ensure the most accurate results and avoid the need for a retest, please follow our Mid-Stream Urine (MSU) collection guide. This prevents 'mixed growth' (contamination from skin bacteria) which can mask an underlying infection.
Mid-Stream Urine (MSU) collection
- This is a standard urine test, for an optimal sample type for urine culture is mid-stream – the middle portion of the bladder / urine stream. Mid steam process:
- Wash your hands and the genital area with water before collecting the sample.
- Begin to urinate into the toilet, then, without stopping the flow, place the collection cup into the stream to catch the “middle” portion of the urine.
- Remove the cup and finish urinating into the toilet.
- Ensure the inside of the cup or lid does not touch your skin.
- Certain medications can affect the level of protein in your urine, so please ask your doctor may if you need to stop taking a medication or to change your dose before the test.
- If you are unsure about the preparation, please contact us for further information.

Common Questions
Why You Might Need a Urinalysis:
Routine Checkup – General health screening.
Diagnosing Symptoms – Helps find causes of pain, blood in urine, frequent urination, or infections.
Monitoring Conditions – Tracks diabetes, kidney disease, liver issues, or UTIs.
Pregnancy & Fertility – Confirms pregnancy or ovulation.
Why does my report say 'Mixed Growth'?
This is a common result when the urine sample is contaminated by bacteria from the skin during collection. Because the lab sees three or more types of bacteria, they cannot determine which one is causing your symptoms. To avoid this, please follow our Mid-Stream Urine collection instructions carefully.
Why didn't I get antibiotic sensitivity results with my culture?
Antibiotic sensitivity testing is only performed when a significant growth of a single pathogen is identified. If your result shows “Mixed Growth” or “No Growth,” the laboratory cannot provide a sensitivity profile. Sensitivity testing on a contaminated sample would be clinically inaccurate and could lead to the wrong treatment.
How can I avoid a contaminated (Mixed Growth) result?
The best way to ensure an accurate result is to provide a Mid-Stream Urine (MSU) sample. This involves:
Cleaning the genital area with water.
Passing the first part of your urine into the toilet.
Catching the “middle” portion of the urine in the sterile container without stopping your flow.
Finishing the rest of your urination into the toilet. This process washes away surface bacteria, ensuring the lab analyzes only the urine from your bladder.
Does a "Mixed Growth" result mean I don't have a UTI?
Not necessarily. A “Mixed Growth” result is inconclusive—it means the sample was not “clean” enough to provide a definitive answer. If you have strong symptoms but receive a mixed growth result, a repeat test using the Mid-Stream technique is usually recommended.
Why is Urine Microscopy performed alongside a Culture?
While a culture grows bacteria over 24–48 hours, Microscopy (part of our Urinalysis) provides an immediate look at the physical components of your urine. It quantifies White Blood Cells (WBCs), Red Blood Cells (RBCs), and epithelial cells. These markers provide vital clues about inflammation and irritation in the urinary tract, even if the culture result is inconclusive.
Can I take this test if I have already started antibiotics?
Ideally, no. Antibiotics work quickly to suppress bacterial growth. If you take even a single dose before providing a sample, it can cause a “False Negative” result (where the lab finds no bacteria even though an infection is present). For the most accurate results, we recommend providing your sample before starting any antibiotic treatment. If you are already on a course, please inform us so we can note this for the laboratory.
How long does it take to get my results?
Results can take up to 5-7 working days especially if a significant organism is found.
Why the wait?
We know you want answers fast. However, clinical-grade microbiology cannot be rushed. It takes time for bacteria to naturally multiply so the scientists can identify them with 100% certainty. This ensures you get the right treatment.
What is the difference between a "Dipstick" test and a "Lab Culture"?
A dipstick is a rapid screening tool that looks for chemical markers (like nitrites). While fast, it is not always 100% accurate and cannot tell you which bacteria is present or which antibiotic to use. A Laboratory Culture is the “Gold Standard” — it is far more sensitive and is the only way to get a specific antibiotic sensitivity map to ensure you are not taking an ineffective medication.
Can I test while on my period (menstruation)?
Yes, you can still perform the test. However, please be aware that blood from menstruation can show up in the Microscopy results as Red Blood Cells (RBCs). To minimize this and avoid a “Mixed Growth” result, please use a tampon if possible and follow the Mid-Stream Urine (MSU) collection technique carefully.

How to find us
Important notes
- Identification of specific bacteria and antibiotic sensitivity testing can only be performed if a single significant organism is grown. If the sample contains multiple types of bacteria (known as ‘Mixed Growth’), it usually indicates contamination from the surrounding skin. In such cases, the laboratory cannot safely identify a single cause of infection, and a repeat test may be required
- We may require details of your GP / Health Care Professional before or at the time of the test.
- Our London East clinic is located on the first floor, up one flight of stairs. Please note that we don’t have a lift available at this location.
- Blood and urine results require interpretation. All results should be interpreted by your regular health care professional / GP.
- All of our first-line tests are optional and provided on a self-referral basis. You must be aged 16 years or over to use this service. If you have an existing medical condition, are undergoing treatment, or have any concerns about whether this test is appropriate for you, we recommend that you consult your GP or healthcare professional before booking.
