About the Neck Ultrasound Scan

Ultrasounds are a widely used diagnostic procedure that takes pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. The images are captured in real-time to show the structure and movement of the internal organs and blood flowing through blood vessels. With advancements in technology, the applications of ultrasound procedures have increased. Moreover, because ultrasound doesn't use ionising radiation, there is no radiation exposure to the patient, and they can take as many ultrasounds as necessary, giving primary healthcare providers a detailed view of the functioning of various internal organs.

Objective of the Neck Ultrasound Scan

The purpose of the neck, thyroid ultrasound scan is to assess the following:

  • Neck Lumps
  • Enlarged Lymph Nodes
  • Thyroid gland if indicated

What can the Neck Ultrasound Scan detect?

A neck ultrasound is an ultrasound technique that creates images of organs inside the neck area. The neck region has various vital organs like the thyroid gland, salivary gland, soft tissue organisation of the neck, jugular arteriovenous system, cervical oesophagus, and muscular and deep neck lymph nodes.

A neck ultrasound is performed by placing the transducer on the neck. Using a specialised gel layer, the device moves on and around the neck area. The sound waves emitted by the transducer help create a clear image of the layout of the neck. The ultrasound can accurately indicate lesions or abnormalities within the neck region.

Neck ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging method. It is safe to use with no known risks and easy to perform. It provides relatively accurate results in the diagnosis and detection of some diseases. However, in some cases, it is necessary to do some additional tests to identify and diagnose the disease correctly.

Why do I need a Neck Ultrasound Scan

There are many reasons why your physician might order a neck ultrasound. The main reason why most people get a private neck ultrasound is to check for abnormalities around the neck area or some type of disease affecting any of the organs in the neck area. A neck ultrasound can check for the following;

Carotid arteries

When examining the carotid arteries, a neck ultrasound:

  • Can detect blocked or narrowed carotid arteries, indicating an increased risk of stroke
  • It can help a physician determine the right kind of treatment needed to lower the risk of stroke

Thyroid gland

A neck ultrasound can;

  • Help confirm whether a lump developing in the neck is from the thyroid or connected tissue.
  • Detecting whether the thyroid nodules require a biopsy. If a biopsy is needed, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration is performed to remove tissue or fluid from the nodule to be checked for cancer.
  • Looking for more nodules in people with one or more nodules felt during a physical exam.
  • Observing the growth of a thyroid nodule to ensure it doesn’t grow to a painful size or start bleeding

Lymph nodes

The scan can also be used to examine the lymph nodes to;

  • Help determine the stage or extent of lymphoma
  • Help show if treatment is working
  • Look for possible signs of lymphoma coming back after treatment

What does the Neck Ultrasound Scan involve?

During the scan, you will be asked to uncover the area being scanned, hence we advise to wear suitable loose clothing and a small amount of ultrasound gel will be placed over your skin.

An ultrasound camera (‘probe’) will then be placed on top and moved along and around the area. This results in a picture appearing on the ultrasound monitor and patient TV which will be translated by the clinical specialist/ medical practitioner.

The ultrasound scan itself usually lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain-free. At the end of the scan, a verbal summary of the results will be provided, as well as your opportunity to ask any questions.

How do I prepare*

It's really important to arrive with the correct preparation as failure to do so may result in us not being able to perform the scan.

I've been to this clinic 4 times over the past 7 years for both pregnancy scans and health scans.... What sterling services they consistently provide! Booking is always easy either online or over the phone, minimum waiting time, and calming environment. What's most impressive is that Mr Usman always explained the scan results thoroughly in a calm and professional way on site and in a report, and quickly spotted issues that both my hospital scan and community clinic scan completely missed (the sonographer at the hospital even asked where I did my scan as she was impressed)! This helped me eventually get timely referral and free from lots of stress. I always feel being well looked after by the team and will wholehearted recommend them to anyone who is looking for efficient, caring and professional more
